BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE
Several low-cost, portable 3D imaging devices appered recently (such as Kinect, Structure sensor, Google's Project Tango, LeapMotion, ) which have huge potential in augmenting or replacing traditional expensive medical tool navigation systems.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
- Review medical procedures that useimage guidance and navigation methods and identify those that might benefit from using these emerging devices
- Implement guidance system for a chosen procedure using a portable 3D imaging device (built on SlicerIGT software platform)
- Evaluate the usability of the system, compare its performance to traditional navigation systems
SKILLS DEVELOPED
Context: Learn basic concepts of tool navigation, computer vision, medical image computing applications.
Analytical: 3D mesh and image processing and analysis, 3D visualization.
Experimental: Tool tracking using various position tracking devices.
BACKGROUND REQUIRED
Practical and experimental aptitude and mindset, linear algebra, numerical methods, programming in C++, Python.
Preferred Prerequisites: Any combination of Computer Integrated Surgery, Medical Informatics or Medical Imaging, Math/Linear algebra
