Perk Lab highlighted by CKWS / Global Kingston

Queen's University hosted Dr. Zoltan Takats for the week of Nov 6-10 as the Dr. Andrew Bruce and Margaret Bruce Visiting Scholar in Surgical Innovation. CKWS / Global News Kingston produced an article and video feature highlighting the leading edge research currently underway at Queen's University that is contributing to bringing Dr. Takats' innovative Intelligent Knife (iKnife) technology into the operating room.

A cut above - Perk Lab featured in the Queen's Gazette

The Queen's Gazette highlighted the multi-center research group dedicated to bringing Intelligent Knife (iKnife) technology into the operating room with an article titled "A cut above". The article coincided with the visit of Dr. Zoltan Takats to Queen's University as the Dr. Andrew Bruce and Margaret Bruce Visiting Scholar in Surgical Innovation.

BRA Day 2017

The Perk Lab attended BRA Day 2017 on October 17th to show demos to the Kingston community.

BRA Day is an informative event for breast reconstruction awareness. In its second year, BRA Day drew a crowd of over 200 people, a combination of women affected by breast cancer and members of the community supporting breast cancer care. The Perk Lab showed two projects relating to breast care cancer and members of the lab had the opportunity to speak with members of the Kingston breast cancer community.

Perk Lab featured in Voice of the City

Perk Lab hosted a double visit by both Mayor Paterson and MPP Kiwala on August 10, 2017. The visit was a solid team effort and went spectacularly. The visit is even featured in the city's semiannual news "Voice of the City"!

Dean Barbara Crow visited the Perk Lab

Barbara Crow, the new Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Queen's, visited the Perk Lab on August 15.

Dean Crow visited the Perk Lab as part of her tour in the School of Computing. She chatted with our students and saw captivating live demos, such as by Rebecca Hisey about her project "Real-time workflow detection using webcam video in central venous catheterization training".

MPP Sophie Kiwala in the Perk Lab

MPP Sophie Kiwala and a COGECO film crew was in the School's Perk Lab on August 10, to shoot an episode for the TV series "Conversations with Sophie".

The Perk Lab Participates in SSTEP

During the week of May 29 - June 2, the Perk Lab participated in the Surgical Skills and Technology Elective Program (SSTEP). This program runs every summer and is open to second year Queen's medical students. This year, the Perk Lab brought three stations for participants to use and train with. These stations were US Needle Tutor, Lumbar Tutor and Suture Tutor. We enjoyed seeing our hard work coming to light and getting feedback from the program participants!

Dr Katharine Carter Visits the Perk Lab!

Dr Katharine Carter (Assistant Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School; Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Centre) visited the Perk Lab on June 7th to see our breast lumpectomy navigation system in clinical use. She also delivered a wonderful presentation about the history of breast cancer treatment and was shown various projects in the lab. We enjoyed her lively presence and hope she will visit us again soon!
