Prof. Fichtinger shares two prestigious book awards

The 2008 PROSE Awards of the Association of American Publishers (dubbed as the “Oscar of Scientific Publishing”) were announced. The Springer Handbook of Robotics, of which Prof Fichtinger was a co-author among many well-known experts, received the Oscar in two categories, most importantly in the overall “Physical Sciences & Mathematics”.

Queen’s / Perk Lab students ran the table at SPIE Medical Imaging, 2009

Our students ran the table at SPIE Medical Imaging 2009. Our contingent was, by far, the most dominating presence at this very prestigious multi-conference. In the Ultrasonic Imaging and Signal Processing conference: -Andrew Lang won 2nd Place Poster Award. -Pezhman Foroughi (former MSc student at Queen's, currently PhD student in the Perk Lab at Johns Hopkins) won Best Poster Award, Best Student Paper Award and 2nd place in the overall Merickel Award competition.

New Senior Software Engineer at the Perk Lab

Andras Lasso, MSc, will join the Perk Lab as senior software engineer. Andras is an expert of surgical navigation, medical image computing and robot control. We managed to hire Andras away from GE Healthcare where he worked for the past eight years. He will start at Queen’s in May 2009. We can hardly wait for him to arrive!

Dr. Aaron Fenster visits the Perk Lab on Feb 5.

Dr. Fenster is one of Canada’s premiere medical imaging experts. It will be a great honor to show him our work.

Perk Lab receives $1,000,000 research infrastructure grant

The Canada Foundation for Innovation has approved Dr. Fichtinger's project on "Percutaneous Oncology Intervention Laboratory" at the tune of $400,000. Ontario and Queen's matching funds bring the total amount of the grant to $1M. Among 44 Institutions and 312 researchers funded, this was the second highest grant: http://www.innovation.ca/en/news/2008/12/12/18#queens.

Maria Ayad receives SPIE Medical Imaging Conference Travel Award

She will give an oral presentation in Orlando at SPIE 2009. Her paper is: M Ayad, J Lee, JL Prince, G Fichtinger Prostate Brachytherapy Seed Localization using a Mobile C-arm without Tracking, SPIE-2009.

Farewell to Dr. Jonathan Boisvert

Our Jonathan Boisvert has won a prestigious research scientist position at the National Research Council at Ottawa. We treated him (and ourselves) with a great feast on this auspicious occasion. As you can see in the picture below, Jonathan had fun beyond reason.
