Collaborative grant awarded to the Austrian Center for Medical Innovation and Technology (ACMIT)

Austrian Center for Medical Innovation and Technology (ACMIT) focuses on the development of new technologies for surgery, with special attention to minimally invasive procedures (MIP). The Perk Lab collaborates with ACMIT in research on percutaneous (through the skin) needle-based interventions used in diagnosis and treatment of solid cancers. The annual budget of the ACMIT is 4.3 million Euros. The guaranteed funding period is 4 years, to be followed by a non-competitive renewal of 3 years, contingent upon successful operation.

Perk Lab receives collaborative NSERC Strategic Project Grant

The Perk Lab receives collaborative NSERC Strategic Project Grant in "Real-time imaging for ultrasound-guided prostate cancer biopsy", in collaboration with the Univeristy of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC) and the Robarts Research Institute (London, ON). The total grant is $480,000 over three years.

All Perk Lab submissions for SPIE 2010 Conference were accepted

All the 7 papers submitted by Perk Lab members to the SPIE Medical Imaging 2010 Conference were accepted. Congratulations to Helen Xu, Hadi Tadayyon, Shachar Avni, Sacha Robinson, Sahar Ghanavati, Pascal Fallavollita, and Elvis Chen.

Perk Station at MICCAI 2009

Perk Station was demonstrated on the MICCAI 2009 conference in London, UK on September 24. Tens of researchers and clinicians took the challenge of hitting a 2mm target on a spine phantom using a biopsy needle - and almost everyone was succeeded.

New research engineer staff

Please join me in welcoming Tamas Heffter, new full-time research engineer (staff) in the Perk Lab. Tamas is an expert in medical image processing and will work on funded research projects, primarily in collaboration with Acoustic MedSystems and Queen's PARTEQ. - Gabor

IEEE TBME best paper award for most citations in the last five years

Our paper is to receive the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering best paper award for most citations in the last five years. Congratulations in particular to Axel and Rob who were the Ph.D. students who really made this project happen.

Paweena (Sue Sue) U-Thainual receives award

Paweena (Sue Sue) U-Thainual received the “Outstanding Graduate Student Achievement Award” of the School of Computing. Sue Sue is the inaugural recipient of this award. Sue Sue is enrolled in Mechanical Engineering, but her contributions and loyalty to the School of Computing were such that merited this prestigious award. New postdoc signs up!

Ehsan Deghan will join the Perk Lab as post doc in September. He joins us from UBC, as specialist of soft tissue deformation modeling and needle placement navigation.

New Software Engineer signs up!

Tamas Heffter will join the Perk Lab as software engineer in September. We managed to hire him away Siemens!
